Chefchaouen to Fes – A Peaceful Morning in the Blue City

Begin your day at 09:30 AM with a self-guided walking tour through the enchanting town of Chefchaouen, often referred to as Morocco’s “Blue Pearl.” Nestled in the foothills of the Rif Mountains, this small town captivates visitors with its whitewashed facades painted in every shade of blue — a soothing and surreal atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Morocco.

Spend the morning strolling at your own pace through its narrow, winding alleys. Along the way, you’ll pass vibrant weaving studios, leather workshops, and artisan stalls showcasing traditional crafts. In the heart of the medina, discover the red-walled Kasbah, a 15th-century fortress surrounded by lush gardens. Nearby, admire the unique octagonal minaret of the Great Mosque rising above the town’s rooftops, adding to the city’s historic charm.

After lunch, meet your driver and continue your journey toward Fes, one of Morocco’s most culturally rich and spiritually significant cities. Continue onward to the vast cedar forest, home to the native Barbary macaques. This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy a short stroll under ancient trees and observe the wildlife in its natural habitat.

The route then leads you to Midelt, situated between the Middle and High Atlas ranges, where you’ll stop for lunch while surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. Afterward, drive through the Tizi N’Talghamt Pass, marveling at the geological formations and colors of the Ziz Gorges, carved by the river over millennia.

As the journey continues, you’ll notice a gradual transition in the landscape, with the arid plains of Errachidia hinting at the proximity of the desert. Today begins early, but for a truly unforgettable reason. Before dawn, you’ll climb the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi to witness what may be the most breathtaking sunrise of your life. As the sun rises over the vast sea of sand, the shifting light transforms the desert into a landscape of vibrant color and serenity.

After enjoying this magical moment, you’ll return to your desert camp for a hearty breakfast. Then, you’ll mount your camel once more for a peaceful trek back to the village of Merzouga, savoring the morning light as it dances across the dunes—a final opportunity to appreciate the stunning natural beauty of the Sahara.

Upon arrival in Merzouga, your driver will be waiting to continue your journey toward the Dades Valley. Along the way, you may choose to stop in Rissani, a historic town known for its traditional markets and as the birthplace of Morocco’s current royal family. Here, you can visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, the spiritual ancestor of the Alaouite dynasty.

Although non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, the exterior alone offers an inspiring introduction to traditional Almohad architecture.

Continue to the splendid Bahia Palace, a masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship built in the late 19th century. As you wander through its mosaic-tiled courtyards, lush gardens, and intricately carved wooden ceilings, your guide will share stories of the palace’s past and the lives of those who once lived there.
